Dalarna, Sweden is a province in central Sweden that borders Norway to the west. The word Dalarna means ”the dales” or valleys and it is a very popular destination for Swedes to go to enjoy great fishing, outstanding campgrounds and the dense green pine forests. Many Swedes own summer homes in Dalarna and the area is speckled with the signature red color of Swedish boat houses and cottages.
The 1000 year old Stora Kopparberg coppermine in Dalarna, Sweden's regional capital of Falun is the source of the ”Falu red' calcamine paint and is a very popular tourist destination. What is considered to be Sweden's national folk art symbol, the wooden Dala Horse, comes from the village of Mora in Dalarna. The early Dala horses were hand carved by peasant wood carvers in days gone by and were given as gifts to children. The Dala Horse was on display at the World's Fair in 1939 and today they can be purchased all around Sweden as souveniers. Sweden's annual Midsommer festival is celebrated on the third Friday in June all around Dalarna, Sweden. The Dala maypole is decorated with leaves and flowers and Swedes don traditional costume and dance the Swedish ”polska” around the pole. Huge feasts are eaten outdoors and the night is for partying with Swedish schnapps and beer. |
